OPERATIONS IN THE COUNTY.
WORK OF THE MONTH. The following interesting report upon the . work of the County Council throughout • the Horowhenua County for the past month was submitted to the Council by the engineer, Mr. W. N. Anderson, at its meeting on Saturday. “Since last meeting the weather has been fine and the work throughout tho County has been carried out in a satisfactory manner. “In the Tokomaru Riding the mam roads are now in good order, excepting tho length between. Makerua Station and the flax-mill gate. I inspected Kingston Road which is in fair order, although a few loads of gravel would make an improvement in places. The longitudinal planking has been renewed on the Tokomaru bridge, and timber has been ordered for the small bridge in front of Mr. Judd’s property.
Wirokino Riding. “During the-period approximately 1100 cubic yards of metal have been put on. The contractor has completed his contract for metalling the roads in the southern end of this Riding,. and the roller is now engaged in rolling some of the roads where the metal was a little rough. Number 1 crusher, although working at only half capacity, put. through 500 cubic yards, which was distributed on Heath’erlea, Koputaroa, Kilsby’s, Heatherlea. East, Barry’s, Potts’,'McDonald, and LevinFoxton Roads, and the lorries arc now engaged on Gladstone Road and Upper Queeri Stre’et. \ A .temporally has been erected over Potts’ Creek and a start will be made during the coming week with the erection of the new bridge on Potts ’ Road, - “Men- have been engaged in the cleaning of the Aratangata drain, and should complete same within the next few days. The flood-gate has not yet been repaired. The road has been widened and the willows cut ,at small bridge on' .the Muhuiloa East Road. “Re pipe-line' through Mrs. Gapper’s property: The Councillors for the Riding and myself visited same during, the period and decided to lay a four-inch pipe alongside the main pipe , and of sufficient depth to allow for ploughing over top of same, the pipe to discharge into natural'water-way towards Arapaepae Road. We also visited drains, on Kuku Soldiers ’ Settlement Road in Connection with the request from the Commissioner. of Crown Lands to clean same, and decided that the Council have no liability except for perhaps about one chain of ditch?
Otaki aiding. “Number 2 crusher has been at work in this Riding, crushing boulders, and put "through 600 cubic yards. Metalling on the Main Road; Waikawa Beach Road, and Manakau township has been completed and a start made on the Waitohu Valley and South Manakau Roads., We experienced great difficulty whilst rolling the metal on the Main Road, in the vicinity of Manakau, owing to the dry weather and more particuiaritly to the want of .consideration shown by motorists (especially the lorry drivers) whilst travelling over, the loose metal. It was found practically impossible to put a surface on the road. The crusher will be shifted towards the end of next week to the pit on the Main Road, near the Waitohu Bridge, when a start will be made with the metalling of the roads in the southern end of this Riding. Longitudinal plainring has been laid on the Waitohu Bridge, and the handrails, posts, etc., painted. Timber and all other gear is on the ground for the South Manakau Road Bridge, but until metal carting is completed, a start cannot be made with the erection of same. ,
Te Horo Elding. Everything in th'e southern end of this Riding is in good order, but in the northern end metalling is required. The crusher will be available early in the New Year wh’en a start will be made with this work. The Hauterc Wjater-Rbees are- being .cieaned .tout and alterations made to the pip’e-line in Mr. Windley’s property. The new bridge on the Hautero Road has been completed, and a chair erected on the site of the Waihoanga Bridge. . The chairman, Cr. Jensen and myself, interviewed Mrs. Duggan re work on far end on Otaki Gorge Road, adjacent to ket property, and it was agreed to visit same and {inspect. We also met the Waihoanga School Committee re aeeess to the school, and a few settlers interested in the extension of Hantere Water-Race, in connection with the the water-race extension. It was decided to get further particulars as to the amount of water available in creek and springs in Mr. Lethbridge’s property, also particulars and levels for a suggested supply from the Otaki River. “A good part of my time during the month has been taken up in obtaining particulars for my report on the Main Highways. ’ ’
