TRIUMPH FOR INSULIN.
RACE TO SAVE A CHILD. A REMARKABLE RECOVERY. Jack Keightley, five years of age, who was. rushed fromi South Africa to London in a, rac!e against the ravages of diabetes, was declared' cured at the London Hospital recently. It is a new marvel of insulin treatment, says a London paper. ~ l » Jack reached the hospital door a few weeks before barely; alive:, He collapsed in the boat train from Southampton, and fell into a diabetic coma. %
He had travelled' from Johannestburg, wheire his. mother was informed by the doctors that the only hope for her son lay in a lightning journey to London in order that he might have insulin treatment. His mother did not waste, an (hour, hut she 1 reached London barely in time. The log of , the London Hospital states: "He arrived so thin- that a treatment suit which he filled 12 months previously now had to be-.pin--1 ned back land front, because of the overlap." The doctors despaired' of his life. His blood sugar had fallen to .02, the lowest ever .recorded in medical history. His diespterail'e condition is made clear when one learns that a rabbit is seized hy convulsions when. its blood sugar reaches .04. " "Hei looked exactly like a skeleton" said a nurse. "His bones were so brittle that I was afraid to touch his hands or limbs Jest I should break them."
He remained iWalf-cojriiatosie for days. The doctors began their work by giving him' ten units of insulin. Their work thereafter was ceaseless and tireless, and he is now cured. He is the pet of the - hospital, a small, fat, chubby person, who has told all the nurses and the doctors that he will give them a; penny each in order that they may go back with, him to South Africa.
