Lockson, which won the Hurdle Race at the Levin meeting, is an animal that is likely to be heard of,again to advantage in early engagements. After the Wellington meeting Mark Time was sent back to Hawera, where hb is trained by Oney Cox. Mark Time has been scratched for the New Zealand Cup. Tarleton, which raced in Australia, is back again in Auckland, but has been allowed to forfeit his engagement in the Great Northern Guineas.

Motley, the smart Absurb two-year-old which won the Roseneath Handicap at Trentham, is under orders for Ellerslie. She will, be accompanied .by Veil. Through the connections of Roseday deny that they have supported the gelding for the. New Zealand Cup, states a Christchurch writer, he and Palestrine are the ruling favourites for next month's race. •

Merry Dan came to grief in the Maiden Huntefs' Steeplechase, and during the running of the Ladies' Bracelet event Uncle Sam slipped a fetlock as the field was turning out of the straight. Lark Hall came down in the Cup Steeplechase, his rider, E. Warner, .sustaining a broken collarbone, while W., Rennie received minor injuries when his mount, Waikawa, fell. Writing to the Referee recently anent the Melbourne Cup, “Pilot" remarked:—“lf Dr. Lang were to rehandicap the whole of the Melbourne Cup field it ( is probable he would raise Heir Apparent more most. That horse has only 71b more than when he ran .second in the Sydney Cup,- and his recent form has been good. yWith the trouble that arose over the scales at the Takapuna course last March, writes “Phaetonf*" it was only to be expected that the committee of the T.J.C. would) move in the matter in a pointed manner, in order to establish the necessary confidence and accuracy of the weighing apparatus used oh their course under all conditions. The “scales" were submitted to a complete qverhaul at the hands of the expert sent from Christchurch, and last Aveek underwent a most searching test in the presence of the inspector of weights and measures and of Major Coyl'e and the secretary, Mr. R. Wynyard. The scales were tested from. 6:0 to 14.0, and the records in every instance were accurate to the complete degree.
