WATERWORKS SCHEME BY CONTRACT.
SPECIAL MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A special meeting of the Borough Council was heiu on wednesuay night to consider matters in connection with die waterworks. Present: The Mayor (Mr Murdoch) and Crs. Butt, Gardner, Murray. Gunning and Beard. Apologies were, received lrom Crs. Carter and Curran.
The engineer recommended rider pipes where inhere are 6-iucn and 4mch pipes, the. rider pipe to be l-mch galvainsea pipes connected up to the steel pipes. The., trouble with the old system vvas the uiisatisiaetory connecting up to die houses which means cutting up ' the roads arid annoyance to the public, also being very costly. Under the system that the Engineer has reeomended the road is not disturbed except for a small portion near the water table. A second advantage is that the steel mains are never tapped, and therefore corrosion at the tapping is avoided. A third advantage is that the pipe will deliver at least 30 per cent, more water which means more efficient fire service- and a greater pressure of water on the higher levels. The estimated cost of new system would be:—Cost of *extra 1-inch pipe £l7B 15s, labour of laying at las per chain £97 10s. tee pieces (three sizes) £SO, plugs and flanges £2O, additional labour crossing footways £SO, Toby boxes, stop cocks and contingent amount £IOO, total £496 ss. Under the old system the bosL would be: Ordinary connections, total cost 250 at 50s each, £625, which-shows that there would be an estimated saving aon the new system of £l2B 15s.
Proposed by Cr. Beard, seconded by Cr. Gardner, that the above report be adopted, the same to run conjointly with the water scheme.
The Council considered the question at length of letting the work of building the reservoir by day Labour versus contract, and after discussion, it was proposed by Cr. Gunning and seconded by Cr. Beard, that the Engireer be instructed to prepare Ms estimates and specifications for. letting the work of erecting the tese: - voir hy contract the Council to find !bc ceirunt An amendment was |7oF osrd by Cr. Gardner, seconded by Cr. Butt that the work be done by da.y labour as requested by the Engineer. On the amendment being put. it was lost, only Crs. Gardner and Butt supporting it, the Mayor and Crs.
