KOPUTAROA-BUCKLEY ROAD.

AN ADVERSE REPORT. WOULD COST £15,000. The County Engineer (Mr W. 'N. Anderson) as instructed at an earlier meeting*, reported a-s follows at Saturday’s meeting ..of the Horowhenua County Council on the proposed new road to Shannon:— t “During the past month I inspected and spent a good deal of time on, the route and estimate oi' the proposed road from Koputaroa to Buckley and now report as follows: ! “To connect Koputaroa and Buckley, a road approximately miles in length is required.- Starting from a point at the Koputaroa store, the ground for the first 15 chains is fairly good, but from that point to a point opposite railway mile peg 65/60, the ground is all swamp for a distance tfi 64 chains and will require to be raised, say three feet; the next 12 chains is Heavy side cutting, and then to railway mile peg 66/40. 50 chains of v-ery bad swamp country, in fact, practically a lake. From tins point on, although still swampy, the ground improves slightly and finishes up with a heavy filling (requiring 5000 cubic yards of -material) to Buckley road. The estimated cost of the road is £15,130. The amount seems largp, but when everything is taken into consideration, you will find the amount to b)e fairly correct. 1 have estimated .on a 20-loot rood. The bad swtanrp ending at peg 66/40 will require l'aiscining and raising some 5 or 6 feet. A bridge 72 feet long will have to be built and a number of large culverts put in. “The difference in distance between tile two routes, -the present read to Shannon and the proposed new road is practically nothing. The route from Levin Post Office to Shannon Post Office, via Ihakara, being 10 miles 25 chains and the proposed road through Koputaroa is ten miles. One road is a good solid raad and the other, in my opinion, would be a very expensive one to maintain for many years to come.”

The report was adopted by the. Council without, discussion.
