ELECTRIC LIGHT FOR SHANNON.
FIRST POLE ERECTED. An event of considerable importance to Shannon took place on Saturday fhomifig when in the presence of the Mayor, councillors and several residents, the first pole for the electric light was erected on Levin road near the Borough boundary. The Mayor, in a few well chosen words, emphasised the importance of the workS4»nd said that beyond doubt it marked an epoch in. the history of Shannon. Among those present jyas an old settler who had felled the bush on the spot and had in years gone by groped his way along bush tracks -with ia, candle in a bottle, but the march of science and engineering skill had now 1 altered things and miad(e * possible the splendid lights that would shortly illuminate our town.
-Photos of the pole in the course of erection were taken by Mr H. Hook and will eventually appear in the illustrated newspapers. It is !estimated that it' will take about'' one month to erect the whole of the poles in the Borough. A temporary supply of power 4s being arranged for .and if the wiring is -not delayed Shannon Should be lighted within three months. There are in all 320 poles to be erected in the BoroUgh, forty street lights being provided for. When completed this will give, our town quite an animated appearance, especially in view of the fact that hitherto we have had nothing worth while in fhe way of lights. 1
