As the outcome of the importation of New Zealand cattle, representations have been made to the Federal ’Minis- - try to make available a Commonwealth steamer to bring cattle from North Queensland to Victorian ports. An anomalous position has been point, ed out in that; whilst the Commonwealth is paying a subsidy ■ to the 'meat'indusrty in Queensland to enable it to export meat, cattle were being brought- f from New Zealand. This ■anomaly is chiefly due'to the shortageof refrigerated 1 space , in. coastal ships and the State restrictions against* the importation of. Queensland cattle, which, the Minister of Agriculture says, cannot be lifted. Cattle a.t j thepresent time are selling in Queensland., at 35/ to £2 a head, while in some cases they re.alised as much as £35 ! per head in the Southern markets. It is understood orders for New Zealand cattle totalled three thousand head, but it was officially stated yesterday that the first shipment may not be repeated. The Sydney wool sales season closed -with a keen demand at late rates,. France, Germany, and Japan were- the keenest operators. BIG LOSS EN ROUTE. Rough weather played havoc with the first shipment* of cattle from New Zealand. Of the .700 head shipped, 100 perished on the voyage. CLEARING-UP WOOL SALE. ,CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night./ An auxiliary wool sale was held today, when 1127 bales were offered. It was practically a “straggler” muster sale from the back blocks, with carryover lots from previous sales, a few odd farm lots and parts of the main fleece clips from the Chathams. Several Home buyers operated to a limited extent, but the bulk of the purchasing power came from local fell- 1 mongers. The sale was dull throughout, and' practically 50 per cent, was passed in. The top price was 18d for seven bales of halfbred. Wools of 48 count and over were down nominally 2d per lb on the last auction, but in view of the quality this does not necessarily mean such reduction in values. All scouring wools were competed for brislcily at practically up to the rates ruling at the recent market. Up to 75 per cent, of the Merino offerings were passed.
