A deputation of members of Parliament, which waited off Mr. Downie Stewart oil Friday, states our Parliamentary reporter, included in their requests a proposal for ; an extra day's racing at Pahiatua. The Minister replied that the request would be noted in the event* of the Government deciding to increase the existing number of permits. The Minister of Internal Affairs, in reply to the request of the Te Aroha, Thames, - and Cambridge, Trotting Clubs for a permit-to hold a two-day race meeting at Auckland during July, stated the number if days on which the 'totalisator could be used many one year was limited by Statute and, as the- full number of days available for trotting clubs had already been allotted, it was regretted there was no totalisator license available which could be granted for the proposed combined two-day trotting meeting. TAXATION OP BETTING. £10,000,000 WAGERED ANNUALLY. (Received Friday, 7 p.m.) . - LONDON, June 28. The secretary of the Turf Guardian Society is giving evidence before the betting committee, urged_ the abolition of street bookmakers, whereof there were a great many. He classed -these as merely runners, or agents,collect-. ing-bets for bookmakers.' r It -ftrould be impossible for, all customers to call at licensed unless a; large number were opened f and' this would lead to employment" for more men for 'the' purpose of collecting bets, thereby bringing betting more prominently before the public. He was satisfied from his calculations that £10,00t),000 was expended annually in betting, wheVOof £3,000,000 went to ihe ; bookmakers, and £7,000,000 to the public. If the tax were imposed it would have to be found by the public.
