SOLDIERS’ MEMORIAL.
PUBLIC MEETING IN SHANNON.
A. public meeting of those interested in furthering the Soldiers’ Memorial was held in the Council Chambers last evening. There was. a fair atterjjlanee, representatives being present from the different sports bodies in Shannon. The Mayor presided. In opening the meeting, the Mayor explained the object was to try and arrange to hold a gymkhana-or something similar with a view to raisin a money to purchase a memorial stone. He started they now had £l5O in hand towards a. memorial. They had been offered a verj r fine stone for £3OO by a Wanganui firm and if they wished ro purchase it they would have to find means for raising the.'money.
Mr Grimstone, as representative of the football club, said the members thought some other form than a stone would be preferred.
Mr Murray spoke in favour of a suitable arch (art the Recreation grounds.
Mr Morgan, of the Cricket Club, said they recognised that something must be done, but thought something useful -should be erected.
It was the general opinion of 'he meeting that a suitable' memorial would be thei erection of gates and arch at the Recreation Ground and also improving the grounds. After further discussion, on the motion of Mr Grim,stone seconded by Mr Sinclair, it. was decided that a further meeting of the public and subscribers be called to reconsider a memorial stone, the meeting to be held on Thursday, May 3, in the Maoriland Theatre.
Tt, was decided that Ibe Borough Engineer be asked to prepare a design of gates ia,nd an arch and estimate of the cost, also price for draining the recreation grounds. The matter of drainage of reserve is to he left, in the hands of Mr Grimstone to get estimates of cost of drain pipes per chain and labour. A vote of thanks, to the Chairman terminated the meeting.
