The problem of the unemployed is not yet solved (says the Clutlia Loader), as evidenced by the number of persons travelling on the road with their '‘blueys M on their backs. One swagsman who was down in his luck travelled through Balclutha on Saturday, and in course of conversation with him it was learned that he had not hud a square meal for the past few days. In fact, he said that when he was passing through. Dunedin he called at the police station and asked to be taken into custody on a charge of vagrancy, as this appeared to him to be the only way to gei a meal. However, it was pointed out that if he was arrested he was liable to get. three months, so instead he was provided with the wherewithal to procure a meal; but when spoken to in Balclutha he seemed to think ho might just as well be in gaol, as he could not get work or food.
