SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Tiie fortnightly meeting of. the Borough Council was held in tiie Council Chambers on Tuesday evening. Present:' The Mayor (Mr Murdoch) and Crs. 'Gardner, Spencer, Butt, Farglier, Hook, Hyde' and Murray. CORRESPONDENCE. ' From J. McPherson, applying for a fortnight’s holiday on full pay.— Granted, providing he secures a competent man to carry out his duties, Council to pay man. Mr Morgan, secretary of tjie Ratepayers Association, applying lor*'use of 'Council Chambers for executive meetings. He pointed out, in support of the request, that' the Ratepayers’ Association, is a body of responsible citizens, whose aim is the general welfare of Shannon. —Granted.

From president, 'Shannon Alhletie, Club, applying for Hie use of the Recreation Grounds on Saturday, April 28, to hold a sports, meeting, .and also for permission to charge.—Granted.

From E. H. ,Crabb, Palmerstoh North, re inspection of pipes at Masterton, by the Council. He stated they were anxious io- quote Council for their requirements, and would be pleased to show Council over works. Unfortunately .bv an error the pipes put aside for testing were sent out with an order by ane of the men in the yard, but Council woqld be able to see the system of pipe-making.— Matter to be allowed to stand over.

From State Advances Office notifying Council that the Board had resolved to entertain the Council’s application for the loan of £SOOO -for the purpose of a water supply. The currency of loan to be 36?, years/and Ike rate of interest .4?, per cent per annum.—Received. SOLDIERS’ MEMORIAL. •'

Cr. Hyde- reported that, together with Crs. Spencer and Gardner, they had visited Wanganui to inspect the statue submitted to the Council for a Soldiers’ Memorial, also with a view to obtaining the bedrock price. After a good deal of argument the firm had decided to accept £350- alid to erect the memorial,. the' Council to pay freight, cartage and provide boulders, cement, gravel and sand. The monument is to rest on a base. He said' (he question now to be “considered was whether the Council thought the money could be raised, or were they .going to set the matter aside.

Cr. Fargher suggested that a meeting be called and allow the public to decide.

Cr. Murray: We will have to make an effort and get 'the question settled. He thought the Council should of Mr an alternative, such as an arch over the gate at. the ' Recreation Grounds, and make tiie grounds attractive. ' . Cr. Gardner: We- want a definite decision what we are going to do. On the suggestion of the Mayor, it w'as decided to make an appeal for further funds at the .concert to fce held on Tuesday evening. , GENERAL. It was decided to celebrate Anzac Day, April 25, as, in the past, the local clergyman to be approached to hold a combined service in the Parish Hail.

Mr J. T. Bo vis was . appointed returning officer for (he coming municipal election. Accounts totalling £179 9/9 were passed for payment.
