SATURDAY’S CRICKET

SHANNON BEAT WERAHOA.

An interesting match in the cricket competition took place on the Shannon ground on Saturday, when Weraroa met Shannon, the home team proving the victors by 31 runs. A review ol' the games between the three leading teams in the competition is somewhat interesting and proof that it is difficult to foretell the result of cricket competitions. Weraroa have xnet and defeated Y.M.C.A. three times. Y.M.C.A. have met Shannon three times and defeated them twice, and, Shannon have met Weraroa three times and defeated them twice. Twice during the competition Y.M.C.A. have placed Shannon two points behind Weraroa, and Saturday’s gam© was the second time that Shannon had to beat. Weraroa to draw level with them. The position at present is: Shannon and Weraroa level, Y.M.C.A. two points behind. Saturday’s play was of the usual standard; Hunt made an exceptionally good -stand' for Shannon, going in second wicket and carrying his bat throughout the innings, finishing up with 20 not out. It was a patient and well-judged effort when a stand was badly needed. Randall 19 and Johnson 10, were the only other double figure scorers. Grainger five wickets for 22, and Morgan three for 8, did the howling for Shannon. Doublefigure scorers for Weraroa were Conder 11 and Sloan 10. O’Connor five wickets for 22, McGill two for 29, Sloan three for 21, were the successful howlers for that side. From the bowling averages it will be seen that O’Connor and Grainger, the two captains, finished with the same average, live for 22.

The' Levin Primary School cricket teanj played Shannon for this trophy on Saturday, but were unable to defeat the Shannon team, which won by an innings and 16 runs. There was one big score of 3:2 compiled bv C.> Goodwin, of Shannon. This boy hit lustily whilst at the wickets, but was somewhat fortunate, as three easy chances were not accepted on the field. W. Goodwin batted solidly for his nine runs. For Levin Atkins bowled well, and but for the chances missed off Goodwin from his bowling, his average would have been a very nne one. He finished up with six for 26. The bowling of Johns, Goodwin and Holden proved too good for the local boys, who scored only 40 for the two visits 1o the crease. In the second innings Phillips carried his bat through, playing sound cricket and <at nQ time looking like losing his wicket. Mr F. G. Hoe, chairman of the Levin District High School Committee, who was present at the match, presented the cup to Goodwin, captain of the Shannon team, and congratulated him and his team on their win. The Levin players were entertained at morning lea by the senior girl pupils of the Shannon School, and Mr Morgan, of the School staff,, provided fruit, which hospitality' was greatly appreciated by the visitors.
