A MODEST PROGRAMME.
SIX CRUISERS AND* SIX SUBMARINES. CONGRESS ASKED FOR MONEY. (Received Monday, 8.15 p.m.) NEW YORK, March 12. The “NeAV York World’s” Washington correspondent says the Navy Department will ask C ongress for approportions for construction of six, and possibly eight, fast cruisers of ten thousand tons, carrying •eight-inch guns, three, mine-laying, and three escort submarines, of 150 0 tons, in order to round out the Nuvy_ under the 55 —3 treaty ratio. Mr Roosevelt declares that although the Naval General Board stressed the necessity for 16 such cruisers and twelve each of the submarines in order to gRe the United States parity Avith the auxiliary craft of Britain and Japan, the Navy Department would only ask appropriation\for a small part of this programme of next Congress. -
