THE MAYOR’S ADVICE.
• TO RATEPAYERS OF THE BOROUGH ' |’ 1 OF SHANNON. Ladies and Gentlemen,—On Monday the poll for the! Water Loan will be taken. It is to' he lfoppd that each 'ratepayer will show he has some interest in the. town by - casting his vote ,for or against the proposal, as he or she shall think fit. Personally, 1 strongly favour the water- supply, and am sure the time has now arri- , . ved to make a forward Tiiqve. If the loan proposal is not carried it .means putting the town five years back. The • reason for the delay in not putting the water supply before the ratepayers earlier is thfit the cost of - material, etc., due to the War; was at a prohibitive price, but now ■- material -lias lessened considerably; To get a; * Water supply for £II,OOO is much cheaper than any other town in New • Zealand,;and there is nothing i can see which should stop any ratepayer voting lor the proposal. —Yours laithfuliy, W. MURDOCH, y ; ■ ’Mayor. ■■/.
■ ; THE -CAUSE* OE‘PROGRESS; ~ : ' >-’■■■' ■ ' "> ', , ■ (To- the Editqr.) - •Si r ,^-As..on' Monday next the polh lor Avatet i supply will be taken, 1 feel 1 hiust -express my appreciation of the 'Mayor and councillors in giving the ratepayers on opportunity to carry this loan; which, in ray opim .ion,' is' - -a'great necessity, as those like myself can certify, who have lmd experience in carting, water in the ■•hummer months, find have, seen where water .has been required in cases of ieel sure those ratepayers will support'the J,oan; and-finally, it also means progress to the town.—l am, etc.,/ f ' PROGRESS. ** -j’ . '* /•/• ’ ■' ’y'V' **'•:. f , - \ ' / / :ANOTHER APPEAL. . f; ; ■ ' 'V-r.-• t >'■ *’ (To tine Editor.) / Sir,—On Monday next the residents of Shannon will have the opportunity of deciding an important step in the history' of Shannon.- viz., the establishment of a water supply for .the town.' The scheme is to supply pure, ’\yater: under high /pressure, inclusive . of all -the latest appliances' and publit convenience. The Borough Councillors have shown great judgment in placing this, proposition before the . ratepayers. Xhey , liave purposely delayed this most iinpoitant work, with the result that the time is opportune to' secure the material required at the lowest bedrock price. x The cost of , the' ..proposed scheme is only £ll,(HX),rwhereas had tlie -work been attempted two years back the passible w cost would have > -been', about £20,000. I may point out tliat i? the poll is lost it is almost .certain- the -ratepayers will be landed ■Svith'a' much more costly scheme, as ,the' Health authorities may step in ' and*- compel the borough to put ~in a : supply..' 'if this scheme is carried as now proposed, a more extravagant 1 scheme is thus ' barred. There is no ■disputing the fact that a water supply- is. urgently needed for all purposes,. including the most important, . which is health. . I advise the ratepayers to take a business view of this matter ahd leave no stone unturned to carry the poll. I may further point out that no town can grow and expand without a supply of • pure
water. It adds to value by giving fire protection, without which capital will not be invested, nor will any person choose a town without \\ atci in prelerence to a town that is adequately supplied with a high-pres-sure water supply. And further, without water, a sewerage system, is impossible. . Therefore, let us look clearly at the question in our own interests and push all factious opposition aside and cany the poll.—l am; eje., , , ‘ BUSINESS."
