and January is likely to record some
startling figures ■ as far as rainfall is concerned.. Up to the 29th inst., it has rained 2-4 days, and a • total of 18 inches has fallen during this period.

Firkett : and Birks, of the Public Works Department, .Wellington, piloted the visiI tors over the different camps. Fortu- | nately the elements happened to hold ; up a little in honour of the FrenchI men.
Messrs. Olsen and party are at present engaged in piercing a drive near the top of the hill in order to open up a quarry for rock to supply + he concrete for the Arapeti dam. It is hoped that sufficient metal of the n;;ht quality will be located at this sfi'i. The rootr is to be transported * r aerial, tramway to the crushing r.w •■
