A CLOSE FINISH.

WERAROA WINS FROM Y.M.C.A

These teams played their competition fixture on Saturday, and the I game resulted in one of the closest j finishes seen in the local ground. | Weraroa hatted first, but: were dis- ! missed for the small total of 46, to which Claridge and Pringle contributed 11 each. Field and Auekram bowled unchanged throughout the' innings. The Y.M.C.A. score was even smaller than Weraroa’s, McGill and i Pringle securing the 10 wickets for | 37. Deacon (10) was the only double- | figure scorer. Going again to the wickets, Weraroa made 80, McGill and O’Connor 21 each, Pringle 12 and Claridge 10. This left Y.M.C.A. 90 to got to win in 35 minutes, and they set about the tasl\ resolutely. Martin and Deacon opened, and went for the bowling. The- score mounted quickly, but with 20 on and his own score 14, Deacon was howled by Sloan. Harris was next. With three runs added, Pringle found Harris’s wicket. Bennett joined Martin, and this pair made an excellent stand. Both hit freely, and the score rose rapidly, Bennett scoring the faster of the two. Willi the hoard showing 74, Martin’s wicket was dislodged by McGill just on time. Weraroa thus won by nine runs on the first innings. Bennett carried his bat for a well-made 30. Scores: —

The cricket competition was advanced another stage on Saturday, when Shannon saw the two local teams (Public Works and Shannon) meet for the second time 1 . On the previous occasion when they met, Shannon scored ail easy victory, but it was thought that Public Works were suffering- from, nerves, and would turn the tables at the next meeting. This, however, was not to be, Randall and Grainger going through the team in eleven overs for 28 runs. Randall finished with an average of six wickets for 7 runs, and Grainger four for 12. The weather conditions were anything but favourable, an adjournment for five minutes being made at one period on account of rain. The Shannon batsmen were in good form, and knocked up 158 for the loss of four wickets and then declared, Grainger 66, Stewart 53 and Hunt 15 (not out) being the principal run-getters. Scores: —
