TENNIS SEASON OPENS

IN GLORIOUS WEATHER

The Shannon Tennis Club opened

its season on Wednesday afternoon in glorious weather. There was a good attendance of members and tlieir friends, and a most pleasant afternoon was spent. During the afternoon, tea

was dispensed by the ladies. The president, Mr J. T. Bovis, in declaring _ the courts opened, said he was pleased to be once more in his position as president, and to be able

to congratulate the members on the flourishing condition of the club. The prospects for the ensuing season were very bright, already several trophies had been promised for competition, and as the committee had arranged club matches every fortnight between teams picked by two members of the club, the interest and enthusiasm should be well maintained. It had been noticed in the past that the interest displayed at. the beginning of the season gradually died off, tnd it was hoped to overcome this unsatisfactory state of affairs by the arranging of club matches. The presilent gave a hearty welcome to all lew members fri the ranks and nffer.

! ed to l visitors the club’s hospitality. I The speaker went on to say he had a very pleasing duty to perform. AU members of the club were aware they were having a change of secretary and treasurer, and the club thought they would like to recognise the good services rendered by the late secretary, Mr Quarrie, and he then handed that gentleman a gold-inounted

cigarette case and a pair of tennis balls. Mr Quarrie suitably responded. The president requested all members to help the secretary where possible, as the position was an honorary one

and entailed a lot of work, and by assi sting would help to make his term of office pleasant. He then called upon Mrs Bovis to send the first ball over the net, and declared the season open.
