THE PORT OF FOXTON.

OFFER OF SUITABLE STEAMER

Foxton, October 4

. meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday to consider a letter from Mr Newman, M.P., regarding an offer of a steamer of satiable draft to work the river and establish a trade connection between Manawatn, Wellington, and the southern ports. It was decided to convene a conference of district Chambers of Commerce to discuss the proposal.

Speaking at the banquet to Mr Field of Ibe futre of Ibis part of the Dominion ,Mr Edward Newman, M.P., said this district had the best prospeels of any in New Zealand. The land and climate were the best in the Dominion ,and it could carry double Its present population. One gentleman had said the interests of this district did not lie in the north, but he differed, and held that the interest of this and the districts to the north centred in the -port of Foxton. He 1 added that, a line of steamers had been arranged to trade! from the South Island and Wellington with Foxton. There had been difficulty with the port of Foxton owing -to the bar, but this was being overcome, and he trusted tbe Chambers of Commerce and other institutions in Foxton, Levin and Palmerston would do their best to make the shipping venture a success.
