RUGBY UNION AFFAIRS.

CUP FOR THIRD GRADE CHAMPIONSHIP. The weekly meeting of the Ma.i agemtjni Commit,ee oi the Hoiowaenua Rugby Union was field on Tuesday evening, me mourners present being Messrs. W. Thomson (chairman), W. Bevan, R. W. Percy, L. Dixon and, L. S. Carmichael (secretary). A letter was received from a supporter of the Te Horo Club regretting that there was no third-grade championship trophy for the'* winning team. Te Horn had been the winners of this grade this season, and he eia closed ahheque for £2 2/ towards the. purchase of a trophy, and suggested that the trophy should be competed for in the future by third grade teams in the Horowhenua Union’s district.

Mr Bevan suggested putting another three guineas to the amount donated and making a total of £5 5/, which would purchase something wortli while. The secretary thought that a cup could be. purchased for that sum.

On the chairman’s motion the cheque was accepted with thanks as a donation towards a third grade championship trophy. It was decided to accept Mr Bevan’s suggestion and purchase a cup for the third grade competition, the Union donating three guineas. The donor of the cheque stated that the Te Horo Club was holding a. social on Wednesday, September 27, and Invited the Union to be present.

Tfliei invitation was accepted, the cup to be presented to the Te Horo team that, .evening: SHANNON’S BED. MATCH. The Shannon Club forwarded a cheque for £l9 4/8, being the credit balance otf the Wafrarapa-Horowhe-nua. rep. match played at Shannon. The total receipts were £32 3/, and the expenses £l2 18/4.

The chairman stated that the financial result of the match was very satisfactory indeed, a statement that was supported by other members, Mr Percy adding that both the Shannon and Otaki rep. matches had turned out very well.

DEFAUTLING REP. PLAYERS. The question of the Foxton rep. players who had failed to keep their engagements after having been selected came up for consideration, the chairman stating that these players had ignored the Union, and something should be done. Mr Bevan suggested, as a meeting of delegates was to be held shortly, the matter he held over till then and dealt with by the delegates. Mr Percy stated it was creating a bad precedent to have players acting in this way. It was decided to hold over the matter till the delegates’ meeting

EXPLANATION WANTED,

In reply to the chairman, the secretary stated that no reply had been received from the Referees’ Association regarding the amount of £5 which the Union had paid the Association, hut that the secretary had stated that the .expenditure of the i money would be shown"Tn their next balance-sheet. Tlie chairman, moved that the Referees’ Association be advised that it is the intention of the Management Committee to prepare a bal-ance-sheet of the Union immediately, and it again requests that a statement in connection with granted to the Association be forwarded within seven days, failing this mo re drastic action will be taken to obtain the required statement. The motion was seconded by Mr Percy and carried.

OVERDUE GATE MONEY. A discussion took place on gate monies owing to the Union by the Foxton and Shannon clubs, and dissatisfaction was expressed that there was so much delay in the payment of these sums. The chairman said there were nt> rules to support the Union in these matters, which was very unsatisfactory.

Mr Bevan considered that these ] monies should be got in as soon as i possible, so that the Union could get its Reason’s -business finished up. Why have to wait till next. March? He considered the Union should by •rights be able to get its balance-sheet out within a month or two v The secretary pointed out that it would hardly be possible to do that, as. it took a considerable time to get the accounts and other matters settled up. Mr Bevan then moved that the Foxton and Shannon clubs be again written to, pointing out that all gate monies taken for club matches have not heen received by the Union, and unless such money is forthcoming within seven days, more drastic action will be taken to obtain same. This was seconded by Mr Dixon and carried.
