BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETS.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening. Present: His .Worship the Mayor (Mr Murdoch), and Crs Fargflier, Hook, Murray, Butt, Spencer, Gardner Richardson and Hyde. AN EXPENSIVE INSPECTOR.

The Department of Health wrote in reference to sanitary inspection and infectious diseases work, which has been performed by the Inspector of

riealth for the Council, pointing out that the amount charged to local bodies left a very large deficit on the cost of working, which in the past has been borne by the Department. Recently the Department decided, in accordance with the spirit of the Health Act, 1920, that local bodies should pay the cost of providing an inspector for the area under their control. Accordingly the amount payable by the Council would be increased to £53 per annum, the first quarterly instalment of £75 15/ falling due on March 31. 1923.

The Mayor pointed out that the Council were now paying £4 10/ per quarter. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Hyde, it was decided that the Government Inspector be not required after January 1, 1923. GENERAL. Mr and Mrs Butler and family wrote thanking the, Mayor and councillors for their expressions of sympathy in theirs recent bereavement. From the Department of Health, notifying the Council of the condition of a dwelling in Ballarfce Street, owned by Mrs Brown, and calling on the Council to serve notice on the owner to carry out, "within eight weeks from date of service, the structural alteration embodied in the certificate attached.—Notice to be served. MISCELLANEOUS. 4

Re fence {erected by Mrs Barker in Stanseli Street.—Mrs Banker to be given three days’ notice to remove fence, in tiie event of her not doing so, the roadman to remove it at her expense. ( The Shannon qo-operative Dairy Co. applied for a temporary license for six months to store benzine until their new building for that purpose is erected.—The Mayor proposed, and Cr. Richardson seconded, that the‘license be granted as from March 31 last on payment ol‘ fee of £T 10/, and that the building be erected within three months from present date.

.The Mayor moved that the Road Committee see that the Foxton Road is put in good order.—Carried.

Cr. Richardson wanted to know if the paths at the’cemetery could be rotarred, as he said it would be a pity to* let them get back to their old state. —The Finance Committee to report at next meeting what funds , are available. Cr. Spencer gave notice of motion that tlhe lee for plots at cemetery be increased to £2 each-
