WILL KEEP MILLIONS IN THE COUNTRY.

ONE EFFECT OF HYDRO-ELECTRIC

POWER.'

In the course of his remarks at Ohau on Thursday, Mr G. A. Monk, Chairman of the Horowtienua Power Board .elaborated one point worthy of notice. It was that the inew motive power was going to keep in this country a great deal of momey that now went abroad ,and further, was going to keep still more money within the British Empire. He referred to the millions that had; gone out of the Dominion for petrol and kerostaie to America and other countries. Djoring the past few years they had see h petrol that cost 12/6 going up to £;/., and kerosene up to 30/. Now they found these products being steadily reduced in price, and he. ventured to say they would see them a great deal lower yet in order to compete against tii«j new motive power that the Power Boards' would introduce., They saw 1 where huge oil reservoirs were being baiilt at Miramar, so that the cost of handling the oil 1 would he cheapened, and he considered one of the chief facto rs behind it was the necessity of lteinj ; able to compete with hydro-electric power. “I am not a man,” continued ilwe chairman, “who goes about the country preaching patriotism, but I do say that we should be patriotic to ourselves and our own country, it is for (you people to say that you are not gioing to be gulled any longer by' /American methods.” (Applause.) Th-fe adoption of hydroelectric power XvouJd keep thousands ol pounds in the -country that now went abroad for petrol and kerosene. The chairman (Mr A. McLeavey) subsequently -emphasised Mr Monk’s remarks on this fealure of the queston, and commended it to the farmers present.
