THE OTAKI SEAT.
The Feilding Star comments: One ' % of the most surprising announcements of the several surprise packets opened by the New Political Party is that of Mr G. H. McClure as the Liberal candidate for the Otaki seat. - Those who are familiar with the Civil Service conditions will wonder how Mr McClure can cut himself free from the Public Service one day and on the next enter the political arena. . Where does his pension come in? — for, of course, the ex-Commissioner of Crown Lands has reached the age of retirement. Several pertinent questions are in order. Is he going into the publicity game as the champion of the Service and to voice his and their protest against the Second Cut and the Third Cut To this there may come the counter: Will there be a Second or a Third Cut? - As Mr Asquith would say: Wait and see. Again another question: Why has Mr McClure chosen the Otaki seat? Probably because he is most familiar with it. And he may be remembering that it was as a Liberal, that Mr Field first won that seat—,, which, by the way, the latter has .. . held for what is nearly a record ; reign, 22 years. And what about Mr Byron Brown’s towards Otaki? The answer to that may be that Mr Brown, who is popular only in the town of Otaki, and not throughout the electorate, is not serious about “giving it a go” again. But there are guid folks down that way who will be saying th’ noo: “A gran’ mon, Mac, for the next Meenister 6’ Lans!” I ' -
