JUNE MEETING OF COUNCIL

The monthly meeting on Saturday was attending by Crs. G. A. Monk (chairman), S. A. Broadbelt, A. R.

Knox, J. R. Whyte, ti. Barber, H. G. ' Bryant, J. McLeavey, C. 1. Haikness and F. J. Ryder. MANURE WORKS NEAR SCHOOL SITE. The Wellington Board of Education stated it had been informed of a proposal that had been before the Council for the establishment of manure works within about four chains of the recently acquired school site at Poroutawhao ,and the Board was communicating .with the Health Department with a view to the work being established at a greater distance from the school. The Board wished to enter no factious objection to the undertaking, which itself was quite commendable, but it felt that the Council would concede the advisability of arranging at the outset for the setting up of such a inanufacture in a place which would not jeopardise„.the welfare of the children.

The chairman said he had-no fur ther information on the matter. The Clerk said the local inspector had informed him negotiations were going on that it was hoped would prove satisfactory. TOKOMARU VALLEY PACK TRACK. Mr James Burton, Shannon, wrote asking that something be done to improve the Tokomaru Valley pack track leading to his section. He was prepared to keep the track open torhorse traffic at a yearly charge of £25, or at the usual rates. The matter was referred to the engineer and councillors, with power tc act.

WATER RACE DEVIATION

Mr J. P. Prouse, Levin, wrote on Delialt ol the James Prouse estate, asking lor permission to divert a water race* to another portion ol' the pro* perty and return the race at a point 70 chains lower down. The inversion was lor the purpose of irrigating a greater portion of the estate.

The chairman said there was a weakness in that the property might he sold, and it might be found that the Council would be expected to maintain the race. He moved that the engineer and councillors for the riding inspect the race and report.

The motior was agreed to SOLDIERS’ RATES,

Two returned soldiers in the Wirokino riding wrote stating that they were not in a position to pay their rates at the present time, but offered to do maintenance work on the roads to the amount owing.

The engineer said if one request of the kind was granted, there would be others.

The chairman: Where returned soldiers are doing their best they should be assisted. (Hear, hear.) He suggested leaving the matter in the hands of the engineer to come to some arrangement by which the soldiers would be employed under supervision of the Council’s roadmen. This was agreed to.
