CRICKET COMPETITION.
WERAROA’S EXCITING WIN. The Weraroa-Shanuon fixture was played on the latter club’s ground on Saturday in cold and showery weather. The home team had first use oi tne wicket, hut with live wickets down for 15, and six for 33, it looked as if the visitors were going to get rid of their opponents at small cost. Prain and Randall then became associated, and made a solid stand, putting on 60 runs before a separation was effected. Prain batted very safely for 34, and Randall did some hard hitting for his 37. Aim played good cricket for 16, and is a promising batsman. The side amassed 130, setting Weraroa a good task. Claridge and Pringle opened for the visitors, and both scored freely from the start and had rattled on 63 before Harris got Claridge’s wicket, alter the latter had put on 39. Pringle went on till lie had 35 opposite his name, when he, too, fell" a victim to the same bowler from a catch by Randall. Hughes was the next to get going, and he batted in good style for 29, and when he was dismissed Weraroa was within a few runs of winning. O’Connor was going strong when he was well taken in long field by Hunt. The finish was very exciting, Weraroa having eight wickets down for 128.- The ninth fell at 132, and Hall and Bevan carried on to 142 before the latter was bowled by Grainger. Weraroa thus won by 12 runs. Scores: — SHANNON. Pringle’s average of two lor 35 would have been better had he got more support from the field, at least two catches being dropped off Lira. O’Connor secured three for 29, and Young one for 16. The Shannon bowlers had a harder task than their opponents, as the rain set in and they had a greasy ball to contend with. Randall and Stewait, who opened the Shannon attack, bowled without success, the former having 46 knocked off him, and the latter 38 without securing a wicket. Harris was the destructive agent, eight wickets falling to him for 33,' whilst Grainger accounted for the remaining two at a cost of 20 runs.
