THE MEMORIAL’S CLAIMS.

| (To the Editor.) i Sir, —I read in your issue of Tuesday last a letter by one who signs himself “Facts.” Weil, it would be much better if he kept strictly to them. Perhaps I give more of my treasure to the churches than he does although not a member of any. But, to be brief, I will give “Facts” a few facts. Only a few months ago the Presbyterian Church sent out begging circulars. Almost at the same time came an appeal for the Methodist harvest* I'estjvaL The Catholic Church followed with a concert. The Anglicans came along with a ball, and now they are all starting over again, to say nothing of the Salvation Army paying- occasional visits. While admitting that some of these cases are not direct appeals, they tend to bar the way lor similar efforts for the objects already mentioned. The question of whether the churches have failed or not is an open one, but we know that our soldier boys did not fail, and it is up to us as a community to support a memorial for them in preference to the churches.—l am, etc., “STORE NOT UP TREASURES.’ [Very little good can be done by following this controversy up along the lines it. is going, and the tendency will be to create an undesirable line of cleavage in the community. The instances qdoted by our correspondent are hardly apropos, since the appeals mentioned are either: (1) directed solely to the members and adherents of the churches mentioned, or (2) are efforts-in which value is given in return for money received. They cannot, therefore, be classed as “begging appeals.” We should be sorry to think that there is not room in Shannon, at the same time, for the soldiers’ memorial movement and the churches, and trust that no more will be heard of any fancied antagonism between these interests.—Ed., News.J PBWHXfMItJII mbbmm—l
