SPOTS ON THE SUN.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —At first sight some of us Avere tempted to think it some\A T hat unkind for one in our midst to point the faults. hoAvever grave, in our municipal arrangements. But- who is the truer friend, the man avlio gives us the opportunity of amending our Avays, or the flatterer Avho pretends not to see Avliat is so obvious to all the world? Oh! Avad some poAA’er the giftie gie us, : To see oorsels as ithers- see us; It Avad free mony an evil free us, And foolish notion. Your correspondent does good service in anathematising the rubbisli heap. But there is a far worse eyesore right in the middle of the town, for all train travellers through this central community to gaze at with contempt, well merited. Look at- the miserable shanty labelled “Shannon Public Library,” and think what- impression it gives v of the intellectuality of the place. A Beautifying Society is good, hut surely a “Decentifying” Society is needed more. Let us wash our ears before Ave put on our best tie. When the churches have finished each having their little jollification, perhaps all Shannon may see the wisdom of ioining in one big effort to improve our central public building. Why not, later on, a big fancy dress b'dl for the children of all denominations? If a, neAV building could not be erected, at least a. decent facade might be accomplished,, and we should no longer flaunt- our squalor or our meanness in the face of all passers-by. And just imagine a town with these eyesores indulging in a monument! Surely our very cats would laugh. Seriously, though, in this neAV country do Ave Avish to perpetuate the silly Old World custom of sticking up stone “memorials” to those we would honour?. Is there ONE of those dear lost ones, \A ? ho, if they could return, Avould not look upon such a thing with disgust Ask those still with us if they would wish so futile a recognition of their services. Like the statues of our kings in the streets of London, its ultim'ato destination AA-ould he the scrap-heap of the mason’s yard.—l am, etc.. SPECTATOR.
