WHAT AN ENTERTAINMENT!
(To the Editor.) Sir—At tiie meeting neid recently at Levin ol resident Justices of the Teuce, one gentleman suggested that a public entertainment (“a mock court’ - ], m winch all the participants should be Justices, would provide an evening’s delightful detection lor the public. It certainly would. Sam Weller remarked of a sitter upon the Bench, that he. “commits hissef as often as he commits other people,” and a mock Gourt. might give the townspeople an opportunity of learning how deeply versed in law our resident Justices have become. Let us imagine three ol their number, in wigs and gowns, sitting upon the Bench, an additional one acting as Clerk of the Court, two as counsel lor the Crown, and two appearing for the defendant. They would be in their element quoting from English law records the judgment given in the case of Tweedledum v. Tweedledee, and others. Of course, there would be a Justice who would appear before the Court on a charge of being found drunk and disorderly in a public place; another charged with selling light-weight, bread, and others of committing serious offences. And there would be several witnesses. We can guess that such a Court would draw a crowded house, and the takings at the door would run into a large amount. To follow the Court proceedings “the great unpaid” could arrange for a banquet for a “feast of reason and flow of soul.” To this function they would invite the Stipendiary Magistrate and the Minister for Justice. This last-named gentleman might possibly find a few legal luminaries in this district, and appoint them as Magistrates in various parts of the Dominion. As 'for our worthy Mayor, we could not afford to lose him, and the Minister might be persuaded to give hfm a call to the Legislative Council. We hope the idea of such a unique entertainment will not be allowed to drop.—l am, etc., INTERESTED. Levin, September IQ.
