THE STRAY CATTLE CASES.
COUNCIL INVESTIGATING DISMISSED INFORMATIONS.
The Mayor (Mr Murdoch), during the meeting of the Borough Council on Friday evening, referred to the large ■number of stray cattle cases which the Council had before the Levin Court on Thursday last, and complimented the ranger (Mr J. Dalzell) on his success in .getting convictions in the great majority of cases. He said, however, that two cases had been dismissed, and he asked the ranger if he fhought there was any chance of taking them up and having them re-heard.
Mr Dalzell said in the two cases in question the Magistrate stated that the ranger must identify the stock to the owner or impound. The Mayor: Can we go further?
Mr Dalzell said he thought so, as he could produce witnesses who saw. the stock on the dates in question. Cr. Hbok said he had seen the stock on the street at the time.
The matfter was left in the hands ol the Mayor and ranger to take what steps they considered desirable.
Cr. Murray said in reading the cases,,there appeared to be a weak point in that the owners should be notified at once. Al?o the 'ranger shoulft get one or two witnesses when the cattle are on the streets.
The Mayor said if anyone had gone to court and denied a charge when he was guilty, The Council should take, steps to sheet it home. The Mayor added that there, appeared to .be, a feeling abroad against the ranger, but the Council should back him up. If the Council had taken witnesses down to the Levin Court it would have put a lot of expense on offenders. This had been saved to them.
