SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of the Council was held on Friday evening. Present: The and Crs. Butts* Hyde, Spencer, Gardner, Richardson, Murray, Hook, and Fargher. The engineer (Mr R. Edwards) was afso present. CORRESPONDENCE. Mr 'H. McMillan wrote/ that, owing to the plumber being engaged, a start * had not yet been made on the sanitary work in connection with the Maoriland Theatre. The writer assured the Council that the delay in the work was no fault of his, and as ' soon as the'plumber was-available, the work would be carried out.—Received., - Mr McMillan asked for the replacement of some timber which was lent to the Council to complete the roadman’s dwelling some time ago.—Received, Cr. Hook to look up quantity of timber received from Mr McMillan. The Valuation Department stated that the revised roll of the; borough was now being compiled, after which it would be placed in the hands of the binder. A separate roll was being forwarded, that would enable the Council to complete its rate book.—Received. Hon. D. H. Guthrie, Acting-Minister t of Railways, acknowledged receipt oi the Council’S'letter in reference to the condition of' the Shannon railway station, and stated that a report was being obtained from the departmental officers.—Received. 1 ( TAXI STAND The Mayor stated that there were a good number of registered taxis in Shannon now, and the drivers were; desirous of having a recognised taxi- / stand. The borough by-laws provided for a stand, and the Council should declare which portion of the streets should be a stand. / Cr. Spencer referred i ’to the question of parking cars. People were in the habit of leaving their cars anywhere in the streets at all times. That was* hot right. He suggested that a time| limit, be fixed as to how long a car should be . allowed to stand in a , Mreet.' 1 ' \ Cr. Butts considered the taxi-cars should not be allowed to stand In froini of the business houses. Cr. Hook moved that a licensed taxistand be between the two railway gates on the western side of Plimmer; terrace. This was carried. The matter of parking cars was lefi over for a* future meeting. Cr. Hook stated that the headmastei had -asked for one or two additional, loads of metal for the new schoo* gates. , Cr. Hyde stated that a culvert shoih be put in, and one taken from one of -the other streets where it was not re-, quired would do very well. . He moved that before the gravel was supplied a culvert be put in. / This was seconded ’by Cr. Butts and carried. LEASE OF RECREATION GROUND. Cr. Hyde, chairman of the Reserves Committee, stated fTiat he had interviewed Mr Bovis, lessee of the recreation- ground, who had made an offer for a v further term. The Mayor: It is only a fair thing in matters of this kind that, they should be open so as to give the public a chance of leasing, if they want to. The Council will then be above suspicion. Councillors took this view, and o« Cr. Hyde’s motion it was decided to continue the term for six months, after that tenders be called for the lease. /UNSWEPT STREETS. Cr. Hyde'drew attention to the^ condition of the street gutters, which Were in a disgraceful state. . They should be swept regularly. The Mayor considered that receptacles should be placed in the street, for the reception of rubbish. This would go a long way in keeping the gutters clean. The matter was referred to the Roads Committee. BEAUTIFYING WORK. Cr. Richardson asked what the Reserves and Roads Committee were doing about the beautifying work in the ? streets. He was ready and willing to do what he had promised to do, but wanted to see the committees make a moverCr. Butts said that on the day arranged to clear the ground of grass, it was wet, and no turned up, Cr. Hyde,' chairman of the Reserves Committee, endorsed what Cr. Butfs said about the day being wet on which the working bee was arranged, and no meeting had been held since.'' Cr. Richardson sdid unless something was done, he would withdraw his.pffer to do the ploughing. It did not seem as if it was^wanted. Cr. Murray considered that no fur ther time should be lost. . A suggestion was made that the engineer should take levels for the kerbing of the street where-the beautifying was to be done, and tenders called for This was supported x by Crs. and Hook, and carried. LIGHTING THE TOWN. The Engineer addressed the Council on an electric lighting installation for the town, the.jnat.ter being dealt with in committee. After examination of the matter, it was decided to author ise the engineer to prepare plans and specifications for lighting the town, and to apply to the Government for a license.
