BAPTISING THE UNIONIST.
SOUP KITCHEN AT FONT. Speaking at Wallaroo, Mr Verran, formerly Labour Premier of the State, Avho is leading the idle miners against the A.W.U., said that trade unionism had thrown men on a ration cart’and finished up by baptising them in a soup kitchen. Trade unionism had fallen into bad hands. The moral wreckage that was going on must be stopped. Boys in the backyard were playing two-up.
It was taking the intellect out of the soul of the child. Other companies, such as Mount Lyell and Mount Morgan, were faced A\dth serious problems. He ventured to say that the Wallaroo Company (a.n*d he held no brief for it) had offered them the best possible conditions in the circumstances, and no body of directors in Australia Avould do more. The minimum Avage of 11s per day had been supplemented Avith concessions in the, way of providing them with all sorts of things at cosjt price, such as boots, f shirts, flannels, socks, pants, firewood, and other household commodities. Mr Verran, Avith considerable fervour and indignation, exclaimed “Good God, men, Avhat more do you want in the present curcumstances? You will be asking next for the company to provide you with eider down quilts and feather beds!”
