REFEREES MEET.
CASE OF ALLEGED BETTING. The weekly meeting of the Horowhenua Referees’ Association was held on Saturday evening. Present: Messrs. Percy (chairman), Karauti, Thomson, Procter, Winiata, Rhodes, Rose, Bevan, Nash, Vickers, Claridge, O’Connor, and the secretary (Mr Higgins).' Mr T. Parata, Waikanae, wrote nominating Mr Udy as a member of the Association. On the motion of the chairman, Mr Udy was duly elected. Mr Burrows, referee in the Hui MaiWanderers match, reported’: that ho had warned J. H .Heremaifi, for disputing the referee’s decision^ Mr Karauti reported having warned two Foxton juniors, Carter and Hirini, for obstruction, and one Weraroa player, Collier, for retaliation when roughly treated by opponents. He also called attention to the feiri on one end of the Foxton ground. Mr Claridge reported Johnson, of Shannon juniors, for extremely rough play. ( The secretary reported that a tation from the Otaki Club, consist- ; ing of Messrs, H. Tahiwi and Baker, waited on him on Tuesday last and laid a charge of betting against a referee in a recent match. The deputation alleged that the referee had £5 on the match, and they gave tlfe name of the party with whom the bet was alleged to have been made, and also the stakeholder. The secretary reported that he had consulted several members, and that it was decided to request the referee to stand down from his fixture pending an inquiry. The referee' had expressed a wish to face his accusers’, and it was resolved, on the motion of Messrs. Rhodes and.Karauti, that Messrs. Tahiwi and Baker be asked to attend a meeting to be arranged. On the motion of Mr Nash, it was j decided to request referees to appoint, where possible, members of the j Association as line umpires. The president, with power to add, Avas elected an appointment committee. I Mr Thomson stated that Mr Ford J had requested to ascertain the names ( and ages of the Foxton fourth grade 1 team as played against the Rovers I IV., as there .seemed some dohbt as to the compliance with the rule of being under 16. Mr O’Connon asked if anything had been done re padding the goal posts. The question of playing members on the Management Committee of the Rugby Union was again raised, and what protection the referees could have if such a proceeding be permitted. On the motion of Mr O’Connor, it was resolved to ask for a reply to the Association’s letter bearing on the subject. A member wished to know what was to be done with regard to the referees attending the Springboks’ match in Wellington on Saturday. This was left to the secretary to arrange, several members handing in their names Jfs being desirous of visiting Wellington on that date. On the motion of Mr Rose, the secretary was instructed to ascertain the cost of silver badges’for the Association, also that the secretary send the Assocition rules to club secretary. Mr O’Connor stated that Mr Smith had wished him to lay a complaint re his treatment, and that he objected to the practice of being requested to stop the play to have the line cleared of spectators. On the motion of Messrs. O’Connor and Claridge, it Avas decided that a’! referees be asked to put all spectators back from the line before the games stort. A hearty vote of thanks was passed i to Mr Nash for his hospitality in giving the use of a room for the purpose of the meeting.
