Lord Hopetoun and party leave for Napier on Saturday morning, and proceed on to the hot lakes on Monday, leaving Auckland for Sydney on March 18th. On arriAal at Sydney Lord Hopetoun will make ano'her exploring tour. Starting at Burke, New South Wales, ho will ride through the interior to Walshalla, in Queensland. Ihe other members of the present party proceed from Sydney to Melbourne. Colonel Fox left to-day to inspect the volunteers of the West Coast of the South Isiund. A well-known Maori named Taiwbare, cousin of Te Whiti, died at Petone lost night, aged 86. The Arawa left Rio de Janeiro for Plymouth on Sunday last. Her frozen meat was reported in good condition. The signatures of the native owner# are being gradually obtained to agreement# for the sale of desirable blocks. About 160,000 acres of native lands have been acquired oince the 81st March last. The largest portion of the land lies in the King Country between Wanganui and Waikato districts, and there is also some of it in Hawke’s Bay Provincial District. The Government propose to dispose of the Cheviot land in paddocks as fenced. They will be put up separately on whatever tenure may bo considered best. The agricultural land will be leased till the Ist October next, and the pastoral land till the Ist April, 1894.

CHRISTCHURCH. Feb. 28,

The right of pasturage on the Cheviot estate, for a period of eleven months, was offered at auction to-day at the upset rental of £867 per month. There was no bid, and it was announced that the estate would therefore be immediately subdivided and opened for settlement.
