TIMARU SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The Committee met last 1 evening. Present—-Messrs B. B. Walcot (Chairman), Tennant, Bowley, Bezzaut, Jones, and Howe. MONTHLY KEPOBTS. The usual monthly reports on the attendance at the schools showed that the average attendance for November had been as follows :—Main School—boys, 166.7 ; girls, 162.5. Infant Department, 365.6. BESIGNATXON. The Chairman stated that Miss Martin had definitely decided to leave the school at the end of the year. General regret was expressed at the loss of so valuable a teacher. COBEESPONDBNOB. Correspondence was read from the Head Master and Mistress, referring to various routine matters and dealt, with. A special letter from Miss Forbes Head Mistress, was also read, protesting against the action that had been taken re Miss Martin. The writer stated that she considered it detrimental to the school to ask a junior member of the staff to withdraw her resignation without consulting her (the writer) who was the immediate superior of the teacher in question ; and further, to induce the teacher to remain by promising that she (Miss Forbes) would bo leaving shortly, was highly indecorous.
After discussion, Mr Howe moved, Mr J ones seconded, and it was carried —" That the Committee consider Miss Forbes has no cause of complaint re Miss Martin’s resignation, as no question was raised necessitating an enquiry.”
Mias Forbes further asked for a testimonial, and that her services ns instructress to the pupil-teacher staff be specially detailed in such document. The Committee resolved unanimously to give Miss Forbes a testimonial, and to obtain from the Education Office the particulars needed to comply with her latter request. REPAIRS. Several repairs to the Main and Side Schools were mentioned as necessary, but the Committee having no funds and understanding that the Education Board was unlikely to have any funds from which to supply the requirements of Committees, till February, the matter was deferred, HOLIDAYS. The question of holidays was con. sidered, and the Committee decided to grant holidays from December 21 to January 21. PRIZE POND. The Chairman suggested that there being now no room available in Timaru for giving an entertainment that would add anything to the prize fund, it would be advisable to send out a circular to parents asking them to contribute to the prize fund. This course was decided upon. The question of who should be asked to distribute the prizes was also brought forward.
It was decided to adjourn the meeting to Thursday, the 14th inst, to admit of action being taken, in the meantime, and additional particulars gathered. Mr Tennant remarked that he had been informed that Mr Clulee had gathered some £SO or so for the High School prizes, and expressed his willingness to do likewise for the Public School. The idea of enlisting Mr Clulee’s services was joyfully entertained. Mr Pearson’s offer of two special writing prizes was gladly accepted. The meeting then adjourned to Thursday, the 14th inst.
