Tho Spring Meeting of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club came off to-day, at Hastings, The weather was dull but fine, with a light breeze blowing. About 2000 persons were present on the course. The betting fraternity was fairly represented, and there were two totalisators, which latter did not appear to work smoothly at firs#. The first event was the Hawke’s Bay Guineas, which brought out a field of seven horses, Kingasak, Eangipo, and Teata being the favorites. The following are the results : Hawke’s Bat Guineas, of 105 sovs. with a sweep of 6 sovs added ; for 3-year-olds ; distance, 1 mile. Kingasak, Sat lOlbs 1 Eangipo, Bst 51 bs ... 2 Yankee, Bst lOlbs ... ... ••• 3 A difficult start was effect, Yankee leading off in grand form, maintaining bis position for nearly half way round the course. Teata, who was rather refractory ran off the course at the start and Carmen followed suit at the back of the course. Yankee, Kingasak, Eangipo and Mahanga were now well together in the order named, with Laribaudere, who was never in the race from the commencement, far behind. Coming info the straight be, rushed forward but was soon collared by Eingasak, who was in turn deposed by Eangipo. An exciting race took place between the last named pair, Kingasak winning by scarcely half a length. Yankee and Mahanga made a good third and fourth respectively. A field of five faced the starter. Romeo was scratched. A. G. led off, followed by Morning Star. Longhand came to grief at the first hurdle; and rolled over, throwing his rider.: Tartar missed the hurdle at the back of . the course, leaving the race to Morning Star, A. G. and Ruahine, who ran in the order named. The second time round, Ruahine ran behind the hurdle near the judges box, thus reducing the race to the two competitors. Morning Star, who had the race apparently all his own way, fell at the last hurdle, the bit getting out of his mouth, and 1m did not finish. A. G. ceme in an easy winner; Sartar, Lonehand and Morning Star were the favorites in the totalisator. Speing Handicap, of 200 sovs., second horse 30 sovs from the stakes distance, miles. Mavis, 6st Blbs, 1 Louie, Bst, ••• ••• „ Virginia Water, Bstl2lb ... ... 3 Seven horses started. Rangipo was scratched.
