GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of the Board was held on Tuesda}’ last. Present: Mr Wm. Upton Slack, (chairman pro tem) Messrs Wm. Deßenzy, Flatman, and Godsell. The following tenders were accepted: No 26—Pye’s road, Stephen Cortney, £lB ; No 27—Skinner’s road, Stephen Cortney, £l6 ; No 28—Wooding’s road, Daniel Gulden, £lO ; No 30 —Kakahu Bush, Thomas Corkery, £l5O. The following correspondence was read and considered :

From Mr Allan McDonald, asking to have forest trees planted in ths reserve near his house. Resolved —“ That the matter be considered when other plantations are being made.”

From Mr J. W. Jones, asking an extension of time until the end of September before he removes his house off the road, also requesting the Board to give Mr Wigley notice to remove all his fences and other obstructions off the public road on the Opuha run. Resolved granted for the house to remain on the road until the end of September, but no further time will be allowed, and for Mr Jones to state the particular obstructions he wished to have removed.”

From thej Chairman of Committee held at Springfield re the railway tariff reduction, asking the co-operation of the Board in the matter.

Resolved—“ That the circular be left for the public meeting to discuss. From Mr E. Speechley, requesting the Board to impound all cattle straying upon the roads in the district. Resolved —“That Mr Andrews be requested to impound all cattle on public roads in the district.” From Mr F. Molloy. dated Bth Aug., asking an extension of time to complete his contract. Granted.

From Mr E. Tarbottom, dated July 31st, re railway crossing at corner of Taylor’s section. Eesolved—“ That the Bail way authorities be asked to make the crossing.” From Mr_D. Guldan, asking an extension of time to complete his contract of four weeks. Granted. From Mr James Bedford, Inspector, Hilton Weir, dated Bth August asking that his salary under the Board should date from the 6th day of July instead of 26th July. Eesolved —“ That he be paid for ten days.” From Mr C.B. Shaw, dated 7th Aug., re duplicate copies of plans of road diversions in the district.” Eesolved —“ That the work be done.” From Mr Eckford, dated 7th August, enclosing deposit receipts of deposits made during month. From Mr Thomas Hardoastle, dated 4th August, asking the Board to make the road passable leading to the Ebubarb hush. Eesolved—“ That the work be done.”

From Mr March, Christchurch, dated Ist August, enclosing a copy of the receipts and expenditure of the Hospital and Charitable Institutions for the year ending 30 June, 1882. Eesolved knowledge the receipt of the same.” From Mr Alex. Cairns, enclosing a circular and drawings of country tram and dray ways. From the Geraldine County Council dated 13th July, enclosing copies of resolution passed at the Council in re “ Harbour Board Act,” asking the co-operation of the Board. Resolved —"That the Clerk acknowledge the receipt of the same.” From Mr John Waller and Co., Christchurch, asking the Board to take 48 pieces 20fta 10x4 first-class kauri at 18s per 100 ft, at Lyttelton. Eesolved—“ That as the timber is not suitable, the Board can only offer the price of birch delivered at Orari, viz , 18s per 100 ft." From Mr Joseph Townsend and others dated August 8, asking the Board to open the road between Pleasant Valley road and Slack’s Valley road.

From Mr William Hawke, dated August 7, asking if Reserve No. 162 was made for planting purposes, also about the bridge near Mr Postlethwaite’s homestead. Resolved That a letter be written to Mr Marshman asking for a list of Reserves in the District and for what purposes reserved ; the Clerk to inform Mr Hawke that a new bridge has already been sanctioned over the creek near Mr Postlethwaite’s, and that the water in the creek is not doing any damage to the road or bridge." From Messrs T. Herlihy and Thomas Addis, dated August 7, asking an advance of Is per cubic yard for breaking metal on the Woodbury road. Resolved—“ That 4s be given per yard.” Proposed by Mr Slack, seconded by Mr Flatman and camied—“ That as the words ‘ for charitable aid purposes ’ inserted in, the resolution for striking a rate at the Geraldine Road Board meeting on July last, might cause the same to be illegal, I give notice that the resolution be rescinded at the next meeting, and in lien thereof an ordinarynotice be inserted.”

Proposed by Mr Slack, seconded by Mr Flatman, and carried—“ That the usual notice in accordance with the ‘Road Board Act’ be published, viz., that it is the intention of the Geraldine Road Board at their next meeting to strike a rate of 6d in the £ on all rateable property in the district for the period ending 1882.” The Overseer’s report was read and considered, and the following resolutions passed thereon:—(l) The work in* eluded in Messrs Wigley and Clarke’s application to be done; (2) Shingling cross road near Wigley’s to stand over for the present; (3) Laishman’s application for work near Mr Barrett’s to stand over; (4) Opihi river protection to be done as suggested by the Ooverseer ; (6) In A. Sherratt and Ealaugher’s application, the Board consider that as there is one good road leading to the Bush it is quite sufficient at present; (6) The metalling in Pye’s application to stand over ; (7) A portion of Collett’s road, also Foster’s road, and 40 chains on Beautiful Yalley, was ordered to bo shingled during the spring or summer ; (8) That the bridge and woir at Helton is to bo finished in fourteen weeks from the 25th July last; (9) That Mr Furton be requested to remove the wires which ho has stapled to the piles at the weir over the Waihi tit Woodbury. Proposed by Mr Doßonzy, seconded by Mr Flatman, and carried—“ That an advertisement be inserted in the “ Timarn Herald ’’ and South Canteeduby Times, to the effect that if all the gorse bo not cleared offjtho roads in the district by the Ist day of September, the Board will remove the same, and charge the cost thereof to adjoining occupiers.” The Inspector of Nuisances report was read and approved, which was to the

effect that the sanitary state of the disI trict was good. j Accounts to the amount of £526 18s , 3d were passed for payment. Mrs A. Heatley waited upon the 1 Board, offering 6s per week for the ! cottage near the Cemetery corner, with j the understanding that certain necessary i repairs be done. Resolved—That Mrs Heatley’s offer be accepted, and repairs effected. • The Board then adjourned until September 12th, at 10 a.m.
