HAWKE’S BAY STEEPLECHASE MEETING. [By Telegraph.] Napier, June 28. At the meeting held on the Hastings Racecourse to-day, between six and seven hundred persons were present; there were very few vehicles on the ground, and only one totalisator. The day was beautifully line, and the course was in excellent condition for racing. MAIDEN HURDLE RAPE, of 30 SOVB. Distance one and a half miles. Taratara ... (J. Rae) 1 Tidal Wave ... (J. Jones) 2 Wild Dayrcll ... (G. Hope) 3 Five other horses also started. A good start was effected, Lady Bab catting out the running to opposite the Grand Stand when she was passed by Taratara ; the other horses with the exception of Wild Dayrell, being close up ; Lady Bab soon resumed the lead to the back of the course, when all the horses except Dayrell, were in a cluster. Tidal Wave forged ahead in the straight, coming to the winning post, but was overhauled by Taratara, who shot ahead like an arrow and won easily by half a length, Wild Dayrell being about five lengths behind. The race came off without a mishap or accident of any kind. steeplechase handicap, of 100 sovs. Distance, 3 miles. . New Year ... (F. Potts) 1 Baron (Edwards) 2 This was a most exciting race. A.G. was sctatched. Lohelisnd, Grey Momus, Sunray, Wild Dayrell, Lady Bah, and Ruahine also started. Baron led at the start, the other horse frequently changing positions, Wild Dayrell being far behind. When coming opposite the grand stand Ruahine came first, followed closely by Baron and New Year. At the double jump Ruahine. Ladybird, and Lonehand baulked, the latter persistently refusing to negotiate the second hurdle. All the horses, with the exception of New Year, Baron, and Sunray were from this time out of the race, each refusing the jumps, and New- Year maintained the lead *to the finish winning in a canter by half a length. Sunray did not finish. Potts, the jockey, raced splendidly all through.
