Te Whanui, who is well known to be the real power behind Tawhaio’s throne, declares that no railwaying Mokau or elsewhere, through the Ngatimaniopoto’s country, will be allowed during his lifetime or until a Parliament, sitting at Auckland, shall have passed new laws to ensure maintenance of Maori authority in the King Country.

A Persistent ClergymanInvercargill, June 28. At a meeting of the Invercargill School Committee a letter was road from' the Rffv. Mr Stobo (Presbyterian) requesting the use of the Central school for half an hour on two days of the week, for the purpose of reading the Bible. He explained that lie did not intend that children should have any lessons to loam at home, They would only be asked questions to ascertain if they understood what was read. Ho would avoid all matter of controversy and would not touch on any questions about which there were differences among Evangelical Christians. The Committee expressed their willingness to aid in the proposal, and it was resolved that his request bo granted, and that the teachers be instructed to give every facility that might bo requisite.
