SUPREME COURT. [By Telegraph. J Inveecabgiie, Jane 21. The Supreme Court opened to-day, and Mr Justice Williams, in his charge, remarked upon there being a greater number of cases than usual, but he did not regard it as indicating any substantial increase in crime in the district. Commenting on the case of embezzlement by a railway clerk, _ he said the grand jury would agree with him, after hearing evidence, thn* , -vas strange some more efficient means '„ould not be found for protecting public funds than appeared to exist at present. Later. At the Supreme Court this morning, William Bilson, for theft (who has been four months awaiting trial), was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, and John Woodrow, for assault, to one day’s imprisonment, he having been in gaol for some time also, and leniency being recommended by the jury. In the case of Cornelius Morgan, charged with cuttif.g trees on property known as Powell Town, the Crown Prosecutor asked to have the charge withdrawn. The Judge accordingly discharged the accused, concurring in the remark of his counsel that the Kesident Magistrate should have dealt summarily with the case.
