TIMARU HIGH SCHOOL.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Board of Governors of the Timaru High School was held last evening. Present —Mr E. A. Chisholm (Chairman), Messrs Belfield, Cluleo, Wakefield, LeCren, and Eev. W. Gillies. The Eector’s report was read and his suggestions considered—lt was resolved “ That application be made to the Government to place on the Estimates a sum of £3OOO for building a Girl’s High School, and that the Chairman, Mr LeCren, the mover and the Sector, be appointed a Committee to draw up a statement of the grounds on which the grant is asked for.” Mr Wakefield dissenting on principle, as ho was entirely opposed to the proposal.

Letters wore read from Mr J. Goodall and Dr Hammond complaining that their boys ha 1 been given too much homo work, and in some cases also “ impositions” in addition. The Rector made an explanation, and the matter was left with the Chairman to deal with further. The Hoard considered Mr Sutter’s action re the High School Bill intro duccd by him, and some disapproval therewith was expressed. It was agreed to telegraph for a copy of the Bill. Mr Gillies brought forward the motion, of which ho had given notice, to alter the dates for the closing of the terms this year, in order to lessen the total of the holidays given in the year. He submitted a statement showing that, adding seven days for occasional public holidays to the holidays scheduled, and deducting two or throe days which he was of .opinion would ho lost as working days, there would bo only 182 working days, just half tho year.

The matter was fully gone into, but Mr Gillies met with no support. Mr Belfield seconded the motion pro forma, and on being put it was lost, the mover only voting for it. The meeting then terminated.
