MOORINGS IN THE ROADSTEAD.
[to the editor.] Sir, —You will agree with me, that the great loss of shipping in this port demands the attention of the Harbor Board, and that of every intelligent person in Timaru; because a good harbor makes a good town. Now, I think the harbor could be made much better and safer than it now is. Of course the Harbor Board will get a steam tug now that the mischief is done, but they want something more than a tug to make this a safe harbor. The great want in the roadstead is something wherewith to hold a vessel. What is wanted are large mooring buoys, where ships can make fast to: the buoys being made fast to mooring chains, or screw piles or whatever is best, so that a ship has not to trust to her cables only, Within the last few weeks property to value of £IOO,OOO sterling has been swallowed by the sea. and lives have been lost which are of more value, to say nothing of the reputation of the port, which is gaining a name above all names for shipwrecks, I am, Ac.. R. B. A.
