THE KING MEETING

[By Telegraph.] Alexandra, May 5. It is still wet, End there will bo no korero to-day. There is little doubt that whatever announcement Tawhiao may consider it policy to make at the meeting, the road now formed down ;to the new bridge will be allowed to go on right through the country, and probably a railway also. Later. Tcpia and Te Helm, with the Manawatu and Foxton Natives, arrived at Alexandra to-day, having been five weeks on the road. They came via Taupo and Cambridge, and shot about fifty birds daily for food. Other Natives, numbering with the southern tribes about 100, have also arrived. Nothing was done at Whaiwhatihoe today. The impression still seems to be abroad that some Minister will come though there is no ground for this expectation. An important question has arisen re the enforcement by the Government of the prohibitionary liquor law here. It is alleged that Alexandra is not included in the districts under the Outlying districts Sale of Spirits act, 1879; or in the Schedule of the Licensing Act, 1875, and that the prohibition against the sale of liquor to the Natives is illegal. The hotelkeepers talk of claiming compensation.
