SECOND EDITION GREAT FIRE AT GISBORNE.
[By Telegraph.] Gisborne, Feb. 6, Last night the most destructive fire that ever took place here destroyed property estimated at over £IOO,OOO worth in value. At shout a quarter past seven o’clock flames were seen issuing from beneath premises. occupied by Graham and Co., wine and spirit meichants. Before anything could be done, to stop the progress 'of the flames they had to* the • Union 1 Company's office and'- 1 the bonded store of T. W. Carr and Sons. These valuable concrete buildings were : erected about 5 years ago, and r cost wool, grass seed, and a large, quantity of .general merchandise. The flames rapidly extended to the premises of Messrs. Pitt and Bennett, auctioneers, and passing the rear of the Union Bank, to MoFarlane’s Hall. Presently the Union Bank caught fire, and then succumbed the offices of Brassey and Fraser, solicitors, and Dickson’s Argyle Hotel, besides one or two other minor buildings. Page’a Masonic Hotel, the Albion, and buildings on the other side of the street were saved with great. difficulty. The whole block is cleared and had there been the slightest breeze blowing? the whole; town would have been burnt down. . " •, ' - » -The insurances in the different offices are as'follows'
