A man named Henry Callow, an inmate of the Old Men’s Home here, went to bathe with three others on Saturday evening in the Ashburton rixer, and dropped dead directly he stepped out of the water. He had been suffering from heart disease, and had been an inmate of the Home for the

last twelve months. Before that he was for some years a resident of Timaru. He was a native of Ireland, and was only 22 years of age, and a great favorite in the Home. Deceased was bnried this morning, an inquest being considered unnecessary. A Big FailureDunedin, Feb. 6. At a meeting of Coombe's creditors today the trustees reported that they had received an offer of £II,OOO from Coombes junior of Christchurch for the estate, conditionally|on the bank accepting his offer of £BOOO for the premises and plant. The meeting decided to leave the - matter in the hands of the trustees. Fire on Board ShipA fire was discovered early this morning on board the barque Manx Queen, lying at Port Chalmers, It originated among the effects of a deceased person which were being sent Home to bis friends. The fire was got under after 30 tons of flour among the cargo had been damaged.
