Mauritius advices to the 15th inst. report that 500 tons of sugar have been cleared for Dunedin, and 750 for Lyttelton. 300 tons are loading for Port Chalmers and 300 for Lyttelton. Shipping. Sailed, this afternoon—Union Company’s steamship Arawata for the Bluff. Sporting. The following is the latest betting On the Melbourne Cupßathurst, 8 to 1; Duchess, 10 to 1; Trump Yoss, 15 to I; Odd Trick, 20 to 1; Sir Modred, 20 to I ; Lord Burghley, 20 to 1. There is little doing in betting. SwindlingMr Thorpe, teller of the Bank of Victoria, has been arrested on a charge of embezzling 500 sovs. which he had replaced with copper coins. The case is not connected with the robbery of notes of the value of £2500 from the same Bank last month. SmallpoxSydney, Oct. 18. There is now every reason to believe that smallpox is sensibly decreasing in the city and suburbs. Stumping. Several members of the Ministry visited Newcastle yesterday, and were cordially received. Sir Henry Parkes> the Premier, in replying to an address, made a lengthy speech, in which ho reviewed the history of his administration.
