BRITISH AND FOREIGN.
[Rbdter’s Aqency.j THE TROUBLE IN IRELANDLondon, Oct. 17. It now transpires that the announce- 1 ment made on the 14th inst., that Mr Arthur O’Connor, M.P., for Queen’s County, was in custody was premature. It now appears that hearing that a warrant had been issued, he made his escape to England and is still at large. Serious rioting took place at Mallow, in County Cork, yesterday between the troops and the people. The former fired upon and then charged the rioters, several of whom were severely injured before they were dispersed. A large meeting under the auspices of the League, which was being held yesterday at Limerick and was attended by a great many people, was suppressed by order of the Government, a large force of police being despatched to disperse the assemblage. Recent speeches and letters by English Democrats have denounced in strong terms the course now being pur sued by Government in Ireland. The head quarters of the Irish National League have been removed to Liverpool, and since the arrest of Mr Dillon on the 14th inst., Mr Arthur O’Connor, M.P., for Queen’s County, for whose arrest a warrant has been issued and who has escaped to England, has assumed the direction of the affairs of the League. The measures adopted by Government for the suppression of disorder in Ireland are being carried out with unabated vigor. A further large number of warrants has been issued by the Irish Executive for the arrest of “ suspects, ’ and many of the local leaders of the Land League have already been taken into custody in proclaimed districts. Telegrams to hand from Ireland state that the riots which recently occurred at Limerick between the police and the people were renewed to-day, when further serious disturbances took place. Too Hot to HoldCalcutta. Oct. 17. Telegrams have been received from Afghanistan announcing that the Ameer's Turkestan army has occupied ILr.it, which has been evacuated by Ayoub Klnn. Quitting QuettahIn accordance with the announcement
