Mr Sydney Johnston (brother of the Postmaster-General) is actively engaged canvassing Clive district, now represented by Mr Ormond. Several Chinamen, who have been market-gardening at Greymouthfor some years, lately left for Homo. During the recent stormy weather the Penguin was 39 hours between Napier and Wellington. The far-famed Cyfartyfa Works in South Wales were closed on June 4, and the last of the men paid olf. It is only two years since they were re opened amidst great rejoicings, but the continued depression in the iron trade has caused * their final close. Dr Carr has abandoned mesmerism, and is at Gunnedah, where (says an exchange) he is practising in medicine. Mr Edward Stone will succeed Sir George Airey as Astronomer Eoyal.
The Sydney ‘‘ Telegraph ” says : There is reason to fear that smallpox will not be stamped out as readily as was expected. The pertinent question is asked in Sidney—why Milner'Stephen, the healing medium, does not breathe on the infected smallpox patients and restore them to health ? Now Stephen has an opportunity of immortalising himself.
