“ All the construction contracts are finished with the exception of contract No. 10, Messrs Fraser and Nicholls, contractors. From a variety of causes nothing was done on this section for many months. Work has, however, been resumed latterly, and the bulk of the work is finished. A good many alterations have been made throughout the works, stone and concrete having been substituted where possible for the timber fluming. Stoneware pipes have been laid in all ground likely to slip, and round the slopes of Mount Horrible the pipe trench inis been cut well into the hill, especially at all sharp turns and steep faces, “ We have carefully examined tho» whole of the race during the late rains, and found no damage done anywhere. “ Before the water is running permanently, it will be necssary to batter the back slopes in a few places and fix a number of sluices for letting storm water out of (he race. There will also be a few more crossings required, the positions of which have not yet been determined. “ The whole of these works will be executed for a very small sum.

“As there arc several clear water streams running down the slopes of Mount Horrible, and if the contractor for the flume erection uses duo diligence, these streams might be turned into the race and running through the North street mains in six or seven weeks time. We have impressed upon the contractors the necessity for pushing on the works, and shall endeavor to insist upon our instructions being carried out.” There were a number of details also furnished in the report which it would be unnecessary to publish. The Council shortly afterwards adjourned.
