A Boy Jumps from the Train. On the journey a Maori boy, one of Tawahio’s followers, attempted to jump from the train, but was cut to pieces. Tawahio actively exerted himself to allay the excitement caused by the accident among his followers. Auckland Boiling Over. The announcement that the Squadron will fritter away in Sydney the time set apart for visiting New Zealand has caused a feeling of intense bitterness. Five hundred pounds for the reception of the Princes had been subscribed in Queen street alone. ScullingThe Dargaville people who sent the winning crew to Auckland in the Interprovincial Sculling Match, have resolved to advertise a sweepstakes Sculling Race, £SO each, to which Hearn, White, and other rowing men shall be invited. The race to he pulled on the Wuiroa river at next Dargaville regatta. Hares not Game in South CanterburyWellington, Aug. 5. The Government “ Gazette ” notifies that hares are not to be deemed game in the South Canterbury district. Exploring Company. At Gisborne a company, having 50 £2 shares, lias been formed for exploring for minerals. Allen will go out prospecting at once. The natives have agreed to Allen’s prospecting being carried out on their lands under certain conditions. Mata Sold AgainDunklin, Aug. 5. Hazlett of Dunedin has purchased Mata for £7OO. Father Larkin Committed for slaughterAdvices have been received here stating that the Rev. Father Larkin has been committed for trial on a charge of manslaughter at Honolulu. He had devised a school which fell in the course of construction, killing a Kanaka boy. Fatal Shooting Accident. Invercargill, August 5. A young named Scott, aged 22, employed on the Invercargill-Riverton railway, while out shooting a few days ago, had his thumb blown off. The contents of the charge and part of the thumb bone lodging in bis shoulder. He lingered to yesterday when he died, mortification having sot in.
