These were questions that suggested themselves to my mind in witnessing the ceremony of laying the foundation stone of the Mechanics’ Institute. His? Excellency on arriving on the ground ‘must have thought he was about to be'shoved, so great was the display of barber’s poles. In fact it is fairly to he, presumed from the “get up” of some of the men’s “ heads” that they had been practised upon before tho arrival of the company. But putting joking aside, avas it not possible to have borrowed a “ a national flag" from some of the ships now in harbor, and thus have shown;, to ■ our Governor that we in Timaru have not forgotten our native home ?—Yours, &c.. .
