Accidents and Offences. Christchurch, Feh. 11. A house and shed the property of E. R. Deacon, was destroyed by Are this morning. Edward Clarkson sentenced in Nov., 1879, to ten years for robbery was released to-day in consequence of having received serious injuries by a fall of earth while at work.

Too Clever by Half Auckland. Feb. 11

At the Police Court to-day, Purcell, a contractor, and bankrupt was charged by the trustee with two offences, via., removing goods belonging to his estate and forgtng a promissory note for £3OO. The case was remanded.

The City Council have resolved to charge a penny admission to their corporation baths.

The Crops

The grain crops in all parts of Auckland are unusually good.

The Timaru Baptists have purchased a quarter-acre section in Heaton street, on which they propose to erect a chapel of wood. In order to help forward the work, a tea-meeting will shortly be held, at which the Itev Thomas Spurgeon, a son of the famous Baptist minister of the Metropolitan Tabernacle, is expected to address the meeting.

The s.s. Penguin, with the Southern portion of the San Francisco mail, is expected to. reach Lyttelton about noon on Saturday. The mails w ; ll ho forwarded by the 1.55 p.m. train to Dunedin and Invercargill.

The schooner Young Dick is now ready for sea, and may sail at any time for Newcastle. She takes 17 tanks of inaP, and carries two passengers. The “ Mail” states that there arc in Oamaru no loss than thirty-two sly groghouses, twelve houses of ill-fame, and twenty houses licensed to sell intoxicating liquors.

Mr B. Hibbard announces in our advertising columns a variety of delicious fruits, condiments, and preserves, which in these days when ordinary food are scarcely presentable will be found admirably adapted for the table.
